What are Routers? Routers are physical devices that join a number of either wired or wireless networks together. Technically, a wired or wireless router is a Layer 3A network gateway, which is an internetworking system, a system that joins two networks together.
A network gateway can be set up completely through software, hardware, or as a combination of the two. Depending on the implementation, network gateways can operate at any level of the OSI model from application protocols to low-level signaling gateway. This means that the wired or wireless router connects networks (just like gateways) and that the router operates at the network layer of the OSI model. Home networks often use an Internet Protocol (IP) wired or wireless router, IP being the most common OSI network layer protocol. An IP router such as a DSL or cable modem broadband router joins the home’s local area network (LAN) to the wide-area network (WAN) of the Internet.
By maintaining configuration information in the ‘routing table,’ wired or wireless routers also can filter the Internet traffic, either incoming or outgoing, based on the IP addresses of senders and receivers. Some routers allow the home networks to update the routing table from a web browser interface. The second generation wireless routers for home broadband networks use a technology called 802.11g. Such a wireless router is able to support more bandwidth than their older 802.11b counterparts. As a result, more computers can be added to the network without jamming it. Another advantage is in faster file sharing and print commands.
