A wireless network is similar in form to a wired network, with many obvious advantages.

The last two decades have seen the evolution of wireless networks from their nascent stage to the current robust platform you now witness. With the addition of multi-function phones, various internet devices, and a more powerful infrastructure, the future looks very bright for wirless networks

Wireless networks are springing up at a very fast rate. Many municipalities are spear-heading the drive to make wi-fi access affordable for all and easy to use. The more places that people can plug in, they feel, the more likely their community will attract the upperscale young consumers who cannot live without their access.

Wireless internet

The term wireless internet describes the process of communicating from a remote device like a Palm or a laptop to a central receiver through radio waves, which is connected to the Internet. The connection is usually on the 2.4 GHz bands. Wireless Internet is also referred to as ?Wireless Fidelity?, particularly when it comes to ?WiFi Hotspots?. A hotspot is a place from where someone can connect to the Internet without wires.

How fast is wireless Internet? This depends on the configuration of your laptop, which will be either 11 or 54 mbps. To get on the Internet through WiFi, your device must be WiFi enabled, which means that you should have either by a built-in connection or an add-on card like a WiFi PCMCIA adapter. Usually it must run with the 802.11b protocol, operating at 11 Mbps, or 802.11g, operating at 54 Mbps. Usually, most devices that support 802.11g is backwards compatible.

Once you have the correct device, the right adapters and the necessary software drivers, you will then need to be at the hotspot.

How close do you need to be to an access point to go online? To check whether you have access, all you have to do is turn on the computer. If you are within range of an access point, you will get a message, which will say that your computer has found a network but you are not connected. And if you are not connected, you will receive a message, which says that the wireless network is not available.

How secure is wireless Internet? Well, this is an area that has disturbed quite a few. By nature, wireless networks are not very secured. While the log in and password data is encrypted, but most other traffic passing through the wireless system can be intercepted.

You also need to remember that in many instances of wireless Internet, there are restrictions on the size of files you can download.
