What is VOIP
We answer the question, what is voip?
VoIP means ‘Voice over Internet Protocol’. Also referred to as ‘Internet Telephony’, it is nothing but the ability to make telephone calls over the Internet. How does it work? VoIP technology converts analog voice signals into digital data packets and supports real-time, two-way transmission of conversations using Internet Protocol (IP).
In simpler terms, VoIP is able to take voice data and break it in to digital packets that can be sent over data networks. Traditionally, voice communication between two locations was analog in nature and took place through copper wires. Switches in the phone company offices provided the connectivity to create the link. And when you were making long distance calls, the data used to be transmitted over long runs of copper wire. Even as more and more telephone companies and exchanges became electronic, the technology in the home or office did not change much.
However VoIP is changing all this slowly. With more and more service providers coming in to the market and an increase in demand, the prices are dropping for the consumer. This in turn is making VoIP more popular and acceptable. Steadily but surely, VoIP is emerging as a ‘big thing’ that will change how people talk over the phone in the next few years.
VoIP calls can be made on the Internet using a VoIP service provider and standard computer audio systems. Alternatively, some service providers support VoIP through ordinary telephones that use special adapters to connect to a home computer network. Many VoIP implementations are based on the H.323 technology standards.
How exactly does VoIP help? It helps a user to reduce the costs of making telephone calls. VoIP also enables more clarity of the voice.
There are some problems of VoIP as well. For example, this technology does not allow the user to make calls to emergency numbers. However this problem is likely to be solved in the near future as many providers have started to work for a solution.
