WiFi security

While everyone agrees that WiFi is the thing of the future, but most people are concerned about the security aspect of a WiFi network. However it needs to also be said that with time and modernization of the sector, these security concerns are diminishing.

Sometime back, WiFi Protected Access or WPA could be easily cracked. Naturally therefore, corporate users did not prefer it. Data, which is an asset to an enterprise, was not safe and thus it was not worthy. Plus there were other problems as well. Such as elements using an unsecured network for nefarious work, even terrorist activities. Watching and distributing pornography was also common. Today however, with the arrival of more robust WPA-2 security standards and other ways as well of securing WiFi networks, companies know that such a network cannot be cracked so easily anymore. Thus slowly, more and more companies are opting for WiFi as they realize this.

And with the arrival of the WPA2 client software for Windows XP, WiFi protection without downloading third-party software has now become a reality.

When WiFi routers, access points and adapters first became available, the only form of built-in security available was WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy. However this could not stand up to the attack of the hackers. In fact, WEP today has become useless.

This is not all. There is more good news. Most WiFi manufacturers have nowadays created secure capabilities into almost all equipment. However on the negative side, in most cases, the security features need to be turned on manually, which is not really desirable.

Now the big question? How secure do you want your network to be? Well, this will largely depend on how you use it. If you need it to just surf and carry out research, you can live with someone else picking up part of the transmission. If you are buying online, then also you do not need the highest protection, because the websites have SSL security themselves.

However, if your data is confidential, then you may want to protect it with your life. It is in these cases that you need a highly secured network.
