Speed is the essence of life, and in the electronic age, it is essentially crucial. WiFi detectors started appearing in the market for the first time a few years back to solve the issue of speed. Today there are quite a few products available and even handheld gadgets.

Here you will come across a few WiFi detectors that you can try out.

Model: WFS-1

Looking like a small rectangular unit about the size of a pack of cigarettes and weighing even less than 1.5 ounces, this smart product comes from SmartID in Singapore. It is often referred to as the ?Ultra Sensitive Instant WiFi Detector?. This device is able to find a WiFi network in the 2.40-2.48GHz frequency bands within 200 meters outdoors and 50 meters indoors. It comes with 2 AAA batteries.

How does it function? All you need to do is just point the directional antenna to the expected direction of the RF signal. A series of 4 flickering red lights indicate signal strength. If there are 4 lights, it would mean that you are in the presence of a very strong signal. No lights mean that there are no WiFi radio signals around.

However on the negative side, the detector will not tell you whether the networks are open or closed. You will also not know whether the security is turned on, you do not know if you will be directed to a walled garden page at a hotspot, and also do not know if the density of users at the access point might prevent you from logging on.

This one is more useful for mobile Mac users. The price is also not too high, which is good for users obviously. But probably the biggest advantage is that, this locater can weed out microwaves and cordless phones that fool other finders. It can also pinpoint the exact location where the signal is the best. The fact is that, due to the nature of 802.11 signals the hot spots within hot spots are not always where they are expected and this is one area where many miss out.

However this gadget too cannot differentiate between open and closed networks like many others like it.
