Verizon Wireless prides themselves on how fast their FiOS service is, and it will be even faster now in several states, due to a new initiative. Customers in 5 states can now expect speeds of 50 Mbps (megabits per second) downstream and 5 Mbps upstream. The states where the speed has been increased are Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.
The mid-tier maximum connection speed in those markets was increased from 15 Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream to 20/5 Mbps, and the top-tier service was increased from 30/5 Mbps to 50/5 Mbps. The company plans similar FiOS Internet speed increases this year in some of the 11 other states where the service is available. Specifics will be announced at a later date.
The announcements came as part of Verizon Wireless speaking at the current CES (Consumer Electronics Show). More details will be released in the coming weeks, but for residents of these five states, things just got a whole lot speedier.
