Cingular has won a lawsuit against a company who made unsolicited marketing calls to their customers. The judge ordered 1st Source Information Specialists to pay over $1.3 million to the claimant.
Cingular Wireless is going after the similar companies in related lawsuits.
Cingular alleged that the operators of webuyresorts.com and resortsellers.com transmitted unauthorized and deceptive text messages to Cingular phones in October related to buying and selling time shares. Their operators could not be reached for comment.
No details on how the companies acquired the calling records from Cingular, but it would appear it was done illegally. In all cases, messages were sent that were not asked for by Cingular customers. This probably signals many more such cases to come in the next few years as cellular phishing and spamming takes on more participants.
