DSL internet access has grown in popularity in the last few years. DSL has become popular with business customers who can't get cable access in their offices. For numerous people, these improvements were just what the doctor ordered and DSL took off relatively quickly after startup. In the initial stages companies like Covad attempted to sell DSL on a national basis, but over time, more and more of the accounts were handle by local telephone companies.
DSL speeds have remained relatively stable in the last few years and the packages offered by companies like SBC have focused on being low cost yet feature rich offerings. SBC has been very successful in their joint venture with Yahoo, in which Yahoo has bundled personalization features and a portal for SBC access customers. It's very likely that more such ventures will be used significantly in the future.
