October 18, 2006
Internet access has changed a great deal over the past 10 years and dial up internet isn't the product it used to be, and America Online (AOL)is feeling the pinch as more and more customers move to high speed cable, DSL or wireless internet access methods.
Today AOL announced that they will be laying off 1,300 employees and closing call centers located in New Mexico and Arizona as part of a restructuring program that was previously announced. 900 employees in Albuquerque and 400 in Tucson will be affected by these cuts.
AOL stated that as many as 5,000 (a quarter of it's global workforce) could lose their jobs as a result of this restructuring plan.
