Earthlink To Build Wireless Network In Alexandria Virginia

Earthlink (ELNK)just announced that they've been chosen to build a wireless network in Alexandria, Virginia. The addition of this wireless coverage will enhance the current wireless network that covers 8 square block of the Old City and provide Wi-Fi Mesh coverage for 16 square miles within the city.

"This initiative has tremendous potential for Alexandria's residents, businesses and government," says Mayor William Euille in a statement. "We believe this is a smart way for the city to encourage broadband development without interfering with the private sector.

Earthlink currently operates similar wireless networks in New Orleans, Louisina; Philadelphia, PA and Anaheim, California. Earthlink said they would offer discounted wireless service to qualifying low-income residents and would make network access free in about two dozen public locations throughout the city.
