Adelphia cable
Adelphia Communications Corporation is the 5th largest cable television company in the United States. This communication major today operates in 31 states across the country and also in Puerto Rico, offering analog and digital video services, high-speed Internet access and other advanced services over its broadband networks. However the company had a less than descent beginning. It was founded in 1952 in the small and obscure town of Coudersport in Pennsylvania and was incorporated in 1972. However by 1998, Adelphia had in excess of 2 million customers for its cable television service. And they were busy expanding in to telecommunications products and services. In just a year from then on, Adelphia was able to double its reach, while serving in excess of 5 million customers.
However the company was not without controversies as well. In May 2002, following allegations of financial irregularities, the founder and CEO John Rigas and CFO Timothy Rigas had to resign from the company and the board of directors. They were subsequently indicted. On June of the same year, Adelphia filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. These were indeed troubled days for this major.
But like an organization with true character, Adelphia started to fight back, headed by a new leadership. The corporate offices were also relocated to Colorado. The company started to restore its reputation, strengthen its business operations and financial performance. And today, we can say that they have been mostly successful in this.
The company has largely been able to upgrade the network enabling them to introduce advanced products like high definition television and video on demand. They have also been able to extend the reach of its popular high-speed Internet service. Adelphia has attached more importance to customer service to strengthen its relationship with the community.
From an obscure past to glory and then to near bankruptcy and now to recovery, Adelphia has seen it all.
